Creating architectural and interior design standards is the clearest way to establish cohesion and connection across multiple offices. That’s exactly what long-term client TYLin engaged FENNIE+MEHL to do as work began on its Oakland, California office.
A unique component of this international engineering firm’s real estate vision is to co-locate in one office multiple business sectors within their pillar of brands. The new Global Infrastructure Design Guidelines formalize elements such as square footage requirements per user, arrangements of space types, and the design look and feel.
Another focus for their global real estate portfolio, recently implemented in the New York and Chicago offices, is to expand group social spaces. In Oakland, this meant elevating the entrance and break area experience with a spacious and bright entry flowing into a multi-functional lounge. The boardroom positioned nearby features a generous glass storefront to maximize the views to the San Francisco Bay, firmly situating the TYLin team in the context of their work on infrastructure in Oakland and the Bay Area. An inviting banquette connects these spaces and provides a spot for both visitors to wait and employees to take a quick coffee break or touch base on a project.
Woven into F+M’s new guidelines is a thoughtful exploration of the different workspaces needed for all employees to thrive, no matter their company. A mixture of innovative furniture solutions for both the private offices and shared formal and casual meeting rooms gives everyone the option to select the space that works best for them. Creating flexible work areas allows TYLin to maintain an efficient and activated office for their hybrid workforce.
Oakland’s design direction paid homage to the city’s cultural, artistic, and handcrafted style. Natural colors combined with bold design reflect the down-to-earth, vibrant maker-culture of the area.
With its new Global Infrastructure Design Guidelines in place, TYLin ensures their entire corporate family upholds the same high standards. Now all employees will enjoy a thoughtfully designed home base for engaging with their team and collaborators while also celebrating the unique culture of each local office.
