F+M Architects on retail design blog

IIDA 2015 Award Winner! Jackson Square Aviation was purchased by a Japanese holding company it required a larger space and a rethink of its business culture. Fennie + Mehl Architects were asked to create a design that honored both Japanese and American traditions as well as the company’s aviation roots.

The new 10,500-square-foot space in San Francisco’s Jackson Square neighborhood is a rich, subtle tribute to aviation and flight. Frameless glass walls, doors and shelving create a transparent, airy space. A floating ceiling in a conference room calls to mind an airplane fuselage. Another, in the largest conference room, is shaped like a gull wing. Office placement is Japanese-style. Bold and luxurious touches, such as massive cantilevered walls and a custom designed reception desk reflect American sensibilities. “We’re known for having the most beautiful offices in the industry,” says CEO Richard Wiley. “Our new space is not only exquisite, it’s a successful blend of our two cultures.”
