GitHub HQ Team Win IIDA Award

San Francisco, CA – It was another high-‐energy, fabulously fun evening at the 10th Annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Honor Awards held at the Fox Theater in Oakland on March 19th.

BNBuilders is honored to announce that their recent GitHub Headquarters project received an Honor Award for the Work Medium category. The team for this award winning project includes: Studio Hatch, Fennie + Mehl Architects, The CRE Group, ARB Mechanical, McMillan Electric Co., HLB Lighting and Murphy Burr Curry.

GitHub Headquarters: Work Medium Honor Award

Located in the heart of the SoMa district in San Francisco, GitHub’s 55,000 square foot, three-‐story work space includes: large open floor plans, a presentation area with stage, a full bar, a commercial kitchen, conference rooms, phone rooms, a dojo, meditation room, indoor park, a hidden speakeasy, library, museum, kid’s play ground, and a roof deck lounge.

GitHub’s culture is reflected in their themed conference rooms, including the Situation Room, Rat Pack room, Saloon, and game room. Upon arriving at GitHub, visitors are greeted within a very reverenced themed room – an exact replica of the Oval Office.

The project was a success story of collaboration to achieve GitHub and the design team’s vision. As a cutting-‐edge technology company, GitHub wanted to incorporate the most efficient sustainable technology on the market, and BNBuilders delivered – the project achieved LEED Gold. From the structural steel to the lighting by Redwood Systems, the GitHub workspace is a work of environmentally conscious material.

“The roof deck is made out of a new product called Resysta, which is about 60 percent rice husk, 20 percent salt and 18 percent mineral oil,” said Tony Castillo, BNBuilders’ Project Manager. “It’s a noncombustible composite that’s durable and weather-‐resistant; you can even stain and sand it just like wood, but it’s made out of food.”

Early in the process, BNBuilders partnered with the equally innovative company, Boxman Studios. “My estimator found Boxman when she ran into them at the annual GreenBuild Conference,” explains Tony. “We started with a sketch and the idea of incorporating a shipping container into the design and it has turned into something amazing; the product looks like a modern prefab modular home.” BNBuilders self-‐performed the installation of the shipping containers on-‐site.

While modern efficiencies were incorporated into the design, the team upheld the historic integrity of the building. The team preserved the historic character by restoring the original wood and exposing the brick and timber throughout the workspace. The building’s unique past is also revealed in the railroad tracks on the ground floor, in the same location as the original track dating from the 1900’s when the building was a dried fruit packing warehouse.

The GitHub Headquarters project incorporates the best of the past with the fun personality of GitHub.
