Celebrating 10 Years with James Ibali

The moment James walked into our studio, we knew we had a shining star on the team. From newly graduated to award-winning Senior Designer & Associate, there’s not one day where we don’t admire James’ creative talents. His drive to excel has made him not just vital to our most celebrated designs, but a key leader in developing project delivery standards and efficiencies that allow F+M to focus on being our client’s true business partner. We asked him to think back on his last decade.

What stood out your first week in the studio?

I do recall being intrigued at the concept of Thirsty Thursdays. I highly approve of them, even all these years later.

Tell us the three projects you’re most proud of and why.

I’d say ForeScout, because it was my first “big” project. I was thrown in the fire straight out of school, and it was a fantastic learning experience as a young designer.

Then Indeed in Foster City, the first project where I was heavily involved with all phases. This project is where the design process “clicked” for me.

And finally Forerunner, designed during Covid. I learned just how crucial communication is during a pandemic.

What part of the process excites you?

Early schematic design/space planning is like figuring out a puzzle, and I love using the creative side of my brain. But I get really nerdy on putting together construction documents too, which is strictly technical thinking.

If we asked your high school friends for your superlative, they’d answer: “Most likely to…”

Be creative.

What are you looking forward to?

Designing spaces for thought-leading clients. These are the people who are changing the world, and my ideas and designs help them do it. That’s pretty cool.

What’s on your Spotify playlist?

For head down work, it’s The Avett Brothers. To get inspired or just start my morning off right, anything from ABBA Gold (Greatest Hits).
