Daring Design Wins at IIDA Awards
Impressing an international jury from Los Angeles, Germany, Seattle, New York, and London with risk taking, unique design elements, and exemplary craftsman work, FENNIE+MEHL took home a top award and nomination at the 20th Anniversary IIDA Awards Northern California chapter at The Masonic in San Francisco. We were thrilled to learn that two of the four nominations in the Work Small category came from our studio.
Emergence: IIDA Honor Award Winner
The location for Emergence’s new flagship headquarters is spectacular: historic Pier 5 on the San Francisco waterfront. We know this building well, after our award-winning project for 8VC two years ago in the other half of Pier 5.
What FENNIE+MEHL knew better than most was how peeling back the drop ceilings and drywall of a previous tenant would reveal the timbers and beams of yesteryear. Now able to ramp up the drama with two-story windows, we also envisioned how re-orienting and re-building a staircase would turn the office into a multi-story showstopper.
Our thanks to project partners Principal Builders, Canopy Project Management, MG West, Rutherford + Chekene Structural Engineers, MEYERS+ Engineers, BEI Construction, Audio Visual Design Group, CSDA Design Group, and Patrick J. Ruane Plasterwork.
Forerunner Ventures: IIDA Honor Award Nominee
The timeless and sophisticated overall voluminous design for Forerunner Ventures, 8,500 sq. ft. within Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco’s Presidio, was also singled out for attention. Of note is the innovative design of our custom lightweight and acoustically absorptive 14’ coffered ceilings built out of gypsum board and stretched fabric. Our thanks to project partners Skyline Construction, PritchardPeck Lighting, and MG West.

Thank you to the IIDA for the honor, and to our clients and project team partners for helping make both of these projects a complete success.
